OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY

General Safety Guidelines

  1. You must have permission to use the OCW (Oak Creek Woodshop) or KBW (Kiln Bay Woodshop). You may not use any tool that you are not qualified to use. Permission to use one woodshop does not extend to the other.
  2. Stay Alert and Aware of your surroundings. Most accidents can be prevented simply by avoiding dangerous situations.
  3. You may not borrow or lend out any tools. Tools may not be taken from OCW or KBW.
  4. You must clean your area, reset fences, guides, and bits to standard (90º), and stow tools after each use of the OCW and KBW. Do not leave unfinished projects on benches, carts, or tool surfaces. Projects must be stored in appropriate locations.
  5. You must respect the guidelines and rules of OCW and KBW and other users of OCW and KBW.
  6. You may not use any tool or material inside of Art Myers’ (2nd tablesaw and surrounding area) Seri Robinson’s (East wall workbench alcove) or Janine Wang’s (plywood cubicle) areas.
  7. Safety glasses are required at all times within the woodshop, not just when machines are in use.
  8. A well-fitted P100 or better respirator is to be worn at all times within the woodshop, not just when machines are in use.
  9. Hearing protection (either over-the-ear or in-ear, unless otherwise specified) must be worn when certain tools or equipment are running. Hearing loss is cumulative and typically irreversible. Noise cancelling hearing equipment is for comfort only and is not protective.
  10. No tropical wood work is permitted outside of tropical wood weeks.
  11. No toxic finishes may be used indoors outside of the finishing room.
  12. Report any damaged, broken, or unusable tools to supervisors. Never use damaged or broken machines. Never use a machine that is producing an unusual sound.
  13. You must report an accident to an instructor, TA, or operations personnel immediately.
  14. You must use installed guard systems unless removal has been approved by Art Myers, Tyler Deboodt, Seri Robinson, or Janine Wang. Be sure guards are properly adjusted. Never remove guards; the removal of guards unnecessarily will result in loss of permission to use OCW or KBW.
  15. Plan out what you are doing before you do it.
  16. When in doubt, ask for assistance.
  17. Closed toed shoes and short sleeves must be worn. No loose jewelry, hair, or clothing is allowed when operating power tools.
  18. Machines must be used for their intended purpose. Never overload machines by forcing the operation
  19. Never leave running tools unattended. Always turn power off when finished.
  20. Always keep hands and fingers a safe distance (at least 2”) from any moving blade. Never wear gloves when operating a power tool in the woodshop.
  21. The operators’ position should be kept clear of dust or scraps to prevent tripping or slipping.
  22. If you are unsure of any special setups, have approved personnel approve the operation.
  23. Never distract anyone using a machine. Wait until they have completed the operation before approaching or initiating any conversation. Do not shout at, touch, or startle the operator.
  24. Always use the dust collection system to reduce airborne dust in the shop.
  25. Always refer to tool manuals and check in with approved personnel before performing any maintenance operations.
  26. Only use OCW and KBW within the approved hours.
